A general grader operator's minimum is R62.24 an hour, about R10,788 a month. Most operators are paid more than that. A grader operator drives a motor grader, which is a big piece of heavy plant used to level and flatten ground. You will mostly find grader operators on road construction projects, civil engineering sites, mining operations, and large land clearing jobs. The work requires a valid operator certificate, solid experience with plant machinery, and the ability to work to precise grade specifications.
It is skilled work and that is why the pay is consistently above average for a job that does not require a degree. When a grader breaks down on site, it is a diesel mechanic who gets it moving again, and that trade pays on a similar curve.

Some salary sites still show R58.56 an hour for a grader operator. That is below the gazetted rate, which was already R75.86 for Final Levels before 1 September 2026. The gap between the two grader grades is R17.80 an hour, about R3,085 a month, so it is worth checking which grade your contract names.
A municipal grader operator post was advertised at R189,804 to R246,372 a year in May 2024, which is R15,817 to R20,531 a month. It was Grader Operator Maintenance at Albertinia for the Garden Route District Municipality, level T7, and the figures are municipal basic pay.

No mine we checked prints a grader operator salary. Redpath Mining's advert for Mogalakwena Mine (26 February 2026) asked for three years of final cut experience and gave no pay. A mining client of Hire Resolve in Gauteng said "negotiable". Assmang Black Rock offered a "competitive all-inclusive flexible package" in 2024, and a Careers24 advert in North West said "market related".
That means any single mine figure for graders is a guess. The R80.04 floor above comes from the civil engineering agreement, so check which agreement your contract falls under before you use it as a mine benchmark. Ask for the all in monthly figure in writing before you accept.
The type of machine you operate also affects your salary. Motor graders used in civil engineering and road works typically pay more than general purpose road graders used on smaller projects.
