Fill in your name

You will see two boxes — one for your first name and one for your last name. Type your real name. This is what people will see when you send them an email.

💡 Tip Use your real name — not a nickname. HR managers will see this name when you apply for jobs.

Choose your email address

Google will suggest an email address for you, or you can type your own. Your email address will end with @gmail.com.

A good email address uses your real name, for example:

                    thabo.nkosi@gmail.com

                    sarah.adams93@gmail.com

💡 Tip If your name is already taken, try adding your birth year or a number at the end. Keep it simple — you need to remember it.

⚠ Avoid this Do not use a funny or unprofessional email address like "coolguy123" or "partyanimal". HR managers will see this.

Create a password

Your password must be at least 8 characters long. It must be something only you know.

A good password mixes letters and numbers, for example: Thabo2024!

⚠ Important — Write it down Write your email address AND your password on a piece of paper and keep it somewhere safe. If you forget it, you will not be able to log in.

Add your phone number for safety

Google will ask if you want to add a phone number. Do this. It is important.

If you ever forget your password, Google will send a message to your phone so you can reset it. This is the easiest way to get back into your account.

💡 Tip South African numbers start with +27. If your number is 071 234 5678, type it as +27 71 234 5678.

Accept Google's terms and finish

Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap "I agree". Your Gmail account is now ready.

You will be taken to your new inbox. It will be empty — that is normal.
